O.K. For anyone who wants to know about us for whatever
odd reason, this is the tale of the forming
of Porch Mob and how we came to be what we are today.
First of all, here is a partial listing of all projects the
first few members had been
involved in over the years, which means since about '86 or so. I'm
pretty sure Matt Glick, our original bassist, had been playing guitar in his room for awhile before he made
the leap into the basement to do vocals and play guitar for
high-school hardcore act Corruption. After Corruption came
the Lake Anne hardcore outfit Last Laugh, which
has gotta be the coolest band name ever. Then came college
and the Blacksburg, VA Joy Division meets hippy-jam band Table Eight with
old friends John Fauntleroy and Etienne Stettler, and Matt's
brother JD, as well.
While Matt was growing as a musician, Dave (guitar,
vox for Porch Mob) had started
playing bass because he had nothing to do while being grounded all the time and he
certainly wasn't gonna be doing his homework. His first band
was so horrible that their drummer used a circular saw blade
for a crash cymbal as they attempted to bash through Nuclear
Assault and Ramones covers. Then came Kids in Dispute and FSA
(which stood for absolutely nothing), then Enough, his first
"real" band, with Farshad Abbassi,
Denton Lindow (currently of Seattle's Gutbomb), Mike McCloud,
Kevin Blankespoor. Then came
Jinx (with Jeff Forbes of Bleeder Resistor), Infusion
(with Jason Browning of Evenout), and All Fall Down with John Issa
(Four Letter Lies) and
Paul Maniscalco (Bleeder Resistor).
Then Dave quit playing to focus on school, then
graduated and got a lame-ass, life-sucking cubicle job. One
day Dave was sitting in his cubicle when he realized that he was gonna have
a mid-life crisis at age 29 unless he started playing music again. He had some guitars lying
around and so he called Matt and asked if he wanted to play bass along to some riffs.
Matt obliged and then they needed a drummer. So they called
Farshad from Enough, and they were soon jamming. Farshad though didn't
have enough time to give to the band, so
Dave approached Mike Goon (who was currently learning drums
while taking a break from The Goons) at a party and asked if he
wanted to try playing. Mikey obliged and Porch Mob was born,
although we were called Damage Done for about a year (that
was our name on Maltsoda Records RKL tribute comp).
We searched and searched for a singer and couldn't find one,
so Dave decided to give it a shot, but not before Mikey had
decided to back out of Porch Mob to rejoin The Goons.
That opened the door for Etienne Stettler, who and grown up with Dave And Matt and played in Utopian Death,
Terminal Velocity, the Prosperous Pigs, Gleak,
and the above-mentioned minor note inspired jam band which
terrorized VA Tech frat houses, Table Eight. It was our time
with Etienne on drums that got us out of the basement and
into the clubs for the first time.
Then Matt left the band to become a friggin' goat farmer of
all things and no this is not a joke. C'est la vie, to each
their own... Thanks Matt!
But before this lineup split up, we were able to lay
down the basic track for a potential 11 song album. We even borrowed
Mikey from The Goons again to bash out a few older tracks
that we still liked and that Etienne hadn't learned yet. The
tracking for the began in late '03, but due to line-up
issues, finances, side projects (Dave joined VPR for a bit,
and did the tail end of Warped Tour with The Goons), etc.
tracking wasn't completed until March '05, with only 5 of
the songs surviving.
Matt was
replaced on bass for a short time by Mookie from The Screws,
and then Jon Shaffer (currently of The Electricutions), another
old friend, took over the low end. Etienne left the band in
late '04 to focus on being a new father, and has been replaced
by Dan Tate (Affront, Knuckledrags).
This is so far the best line-up for the band. We
recorded a live set at the Velvet Lounge in May '05 with
this line-up and some of it came out so well that we're
adding some of the tracks to the aforementioned 5 studio
tracks to make a 50/50 studio/live album called Can of
Worms, which will be released in Jan '06.
We're currently writing new songs for a potential
split or two and/or possibly a new full-length.
We're ready to play, if you're ready to book us, so give us
a shout.
